File Explorer alternately works for 18 seconds and crashes 4 times

Starting about a week ago, File Explorer has a new personality. It works for about 18 seconds, during which the left sidebar shows items with a reasonable spacing:

Then space appears between the items in the left sidebar:

and File Explorer crashes a few seconds later. The next 3 times I open a File Explorer window, the spaces appear immediately and it crashes.

However, after the 4th crash, I can use File Explorer again for 18 seconds. (Then 4 crashes again, 18 seconds of working, etc.)

I'm sure that someone at Microsoft had a lot of fun crafting this feature, but I prefer the old behavior (no spaces appearing in sidebar, and no crashes). How do I turn off the works-for-18-seconds-then-crashes-4-times loop?

I believe that the Folder Options dialog contains some spelling errors, corrected below.

Uncheck the "crash File Explorer" boxes if you don't want to crash File Explorer. (has been working flawlessly for a few days now)
