Has anyone come across the word "retrovorter" as an autological (self-referential) synonym for "palindrome"?
Retrovorter (self-referential synonym of "palindrome")
Top Answer/Comment:
Retrovorter is not in commonly-used dictionaries: I checked Merriam-Webster, Wiktionary, Collins online, Cambridge online, and the OED. There are no results for a Google Books search. It does not occur in the Corpus of Contemporary American English. These results are as of 16 June 2026.
There is a very small number of Google search hits. It is listed in a Wiktionary appendix, English autological terms, but this does not link to a corresponding dictionary entry. It also features on website Keith's Think Zone on the Word Fun page, which seems to be the only website apart from this one to offer a definition; Keith's Think Zone appears to be one person's website, does not have a Wikipedia entry, and is not widely referenced by other sites. And the word features on Stack Exchange pages such as this one. But there don't seem to be any pages using it in a normal sentence, suggesting it has little or no currency.
There is an anatomical term, retroverted, defined by Cambridge as "(of a body part) sloping backwards".
Hence the conclusion is that retrovorter is not widely used, and is not a generally accepted English word.
