lagging behind in career
I was always a diligent and bright student in school and college and was always hard working. I have been in the software industry for 20 years too and if that is a valid benchmark, I have survived in the industry long enough. Was able to even raise a family, have decent earnings, even purchased a house (paid off already)
Yet, I feel like a miserable failure. I always feel that most of my peers are doing much better than me. Even after 20 years, I always feel that I am as good as just a guy with 7-8 years of experience. And I have nothing valuable to offer. This is a feeling that has often come up in the last 2 years in particular.
How do I improve? I also feel I am very sloppy and careless.

You're going to have be honest with yourself first.
- Is it a depression issue (I am not qualified to diagnose that)? If it might be please get help or get help to find out.
- Is it an imposter syndrome issue? Being aware it is might be enough to get out of the rut or getting professional might be required. (Again, I am not qualified
to diagnose that).
- Is it a growth career growth or lack of it issue? College was 20
years ago. To me that is a red flag that you bring up your college
performance. Is there all that much from school that you use on a
day-to-day basis?
If it is a career growth issue, focus on learning new tech and skills. This is the best way to get out of a rut and start moving forward. If you find that you enjoy a new area that your company values, there is a path forward otherwise consider finding a company that values inititive.
